As you weigh your options, we invite you to learn more about how hair transplants work and what they entail.
Here’s a crash course for better understanding understanding Hair Transplants.
What is a hair transplant?
At the most basic level, a hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which healthy hair follicles are harvested from the back or side of the head, then grafted onto a bald or patchy spot on the scalp. A hair transplant offers a reliable, long-term answer to hair loss.
Who benefits from having a hair transplant?
We generally recommend hair transplants to anyone who is looking for a solution to moderate-to-extreme hair loss. The ideal patients include men dealing with male pattern hair loss; women who have noticed significant thinning hair; and anyone who has lost big patches of hair due to a burn or an accident. By contrast, hair transplants usually aren’t recommended for those who lack sufficient hair to provide a good “donor site.” And we don’t recommend hair transplants for those who have lost hair due to medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
What should I know about the procedure?
Hair transplants usually just take a couple of hours. They are conducted entirely under local anesthesia. Hair transplants are done on an inpatient basis, so patients will usually be home to rest and recover within hours.
What is the hair transplant recovery process like?
Following a hair transplant, it’s not unusual for patients to have a little soreness or redness of the scalp. There may also be some minor discomfort, which can typically be treated with pain medications. You’ll likely be prescribed some antibiotics to minimize the risk of infection, and anti-inflammatory medications to help keep the swelling down.
Most folks are able to return to their normal daily activities within a week or so.
How long will it take to see results?
It’s pretty normal for newly grafted hair to fall out, after which new hair will start growing within a few weeks. That new hair will grow at the same rate as “normal,” healthy hair.
Are the effects of a hair transplant permanent?
While it’s possible that other parts of your scalp may one day experience hair loss, the treated area should continue to grow healthy hair for the rest of your life.
